Mountain Bike Suspension Buying Guide: Forks & Rear Shocks Explained

Why Suspension Matters on Philippine Trails

Philippine trails are diverse — from loose rocky descents in Benguet to rooty singletracks in Rizal. The right suspension absorbs impacts, keeps your wheels tracking the ground, and lets you ride faster with more confidence.

Step 1: How Much Travel Do You Need?

  • 80–100mm: XC and cross-country racing. Lightweight and efficient for fast, less technical terrain.
  • 120–130mm: Trail riding. The versatile sweet spot for most Philippine trail riders.
  • 140–160mm: All-mountain and enduro. For aggressive riders on steep, technical terrain.
  • 170–200mm: Downhill and enduro racing. Maximum travel for the most demanding descents.

Tip: Match your fork travel to your frame's intended travel range to preserve geometry.

Step 2: Air Spring vs Coil Spring

Air suspension: Adjustable via a shock pump, lighter, and more progressive feel. Best for trail, XC, and all-mountain riders. Recommended for most Philippine trail riders.

Coil suspension: More supple and linear feel with better small-bump sensitivity. Heavier but more durable. Preferred for enduro and downhill where ultimate feel and durability matter.

Step 3: Top Fork Brands and Tiers

RockShox: Recon/Revelation (entry-mid), Pike (mid-high, very popular trail fork), Lyrik/ZEB (enduro), SID (XC race).

Fox: Rhythm (entry), Performance/Performance Elite (mid, Grip or Grip 2 damper), Factory (high-end FLOAT air spring).

Step 4: Rear Shock Basics

For full suspension bikes, your rear shock must match your frame's eye-to-eye and stroke length. Common sizes: 185x55mm, 200x57mm, 210x55mm, 230x60mm — always verify with your frame spec sheet.

Top brands: RockShox (Super Deluxe, Monarch), Fox (Float DPS, Float X, DHX), Cane Creek (DB series).

Step 5: Axle and Standard Compatibility

  • Front axle: 15x100mm (non-Boost) or 15x110mm Boost — must match your hub
  • Steerer tube: 1-1/8" straight, tapered, or 1.5" — must match your frame's head tube
  • Brake mount: Post Mount or IS — must match your caliper

Budget Guide (PHP)

  • Entry (PHP 8,000–18,000): RockShox Recon or Fox Rhythm — reliable air forks for trail use
  • Mid (PHP 18,000–40,000): RockShox Pike or Fox Performance — excellent all-around trail forks
  • High end (PHP 40,000+): RockShox Lyrik/ZEB or Fox Factory — enduro-ready with premium damping
