Mountain Bike Cockpit Setup Guide: Handlebars, Stems & Grips
Share
What Is the MTB Cockpit?
Your cockpit is everything you hold and interact with at the front of your bike — handlebars, stem, grips, and controls. Getting it right affects your comfort, control, and confidence on technical trail sections.
Step 1: Choose Your Handlebar Width
- 720–740mm: XC racing. Narrower for an aerodynamic position.
- 750–780mm: Trail riding sweet spot. Good balance of control and comfort for most riders.
- 780–800mm+: Enduro and downhill. Maximum leverage for aggressive riding.
Tip: Your bar width should roughly match your shoulder width. Many riders cut their bars to fine-tune the width.
Step 2: Choose Your Handlebar Rise
- 0–15mm rise: Lower, more aggressive position for XC and fast trail riding.
- 20–35mm rise: More upright and comfortable for trail and enduro riders.
- 35mm+ rise: Enduro and DH use for steep descents.
Step 3: Pick Your Stem Length
- 35–50mm: Short stems are standard for modern trail and enduro bikes. Quicker, more responsive steering.
- 50–70mm: Mid-length for XC bikes and riders who prefer a longer reach.
Modern MTB trend: Pair a short stem (35–50mm) with wide bars (760–800mm) for the best trail handling.
Step 4: Choose Your Grips
- Lock-on grips: The standard for MTB. Secured with clamps so they never slip. Easy to install and replace.
- Double clamp: More secure, preferred for aggressive riding.
- Thickness: Thicker absorbs more vibration; thinner gives more feedback.
- Material: Rubber for durability; silicone for extra grip and vibration damping.
Step 5: Aluminum vs Carbon Bars
- Aluminum: Durable, affordable, forgiving on impacts. Best for most trail riders.
- Carbon: Lighter and better vibration damping. More expensive — inspect regularly for cracks after hard impacts.
Compatibility Checklist
- Bar clamp diameter: 31.8mm or 35mm — must match your stem
- Stem steerer clamp: 1-1/8", 1.5", or tapered — must match your fork
- Grip inner diameter: 22.2mm — standard for all MTB bars
Budget Guide (PHP)
- Entry (PHP 2,000–6,000): Aluminum bars, basic lock-on grips, and reliable alloy stem
- Mid (PHP 6,000–15,000): Lightweight aluminum cockpit from Deity, Race Face, or Renthal
- High end (PHP 15,000+): Carbon handlebars and stem combo for weight savings and vibration reduction
